Name of Scientific / Technical Leader: Dr Anthony Rowe, Ph.D. (eTRIKS Deputy Co-ordinator)

Key individuals: Dr Anthony Rowe is Principal Research Scientist, External Innovation, R&D IT in Janssen Research and Development. Currently he is actively participating in the Knowledge Management Activities in the IMI Projects: U-BIOPRED, BT CURE, OncoTrack, Predict-TB, EMIF & STEMBANCC. Formerly he was based at Imperial College and was the Knowledge Management Lead for the U-BIOPRED project. Prior to this he was a member of the founding team and Director of Product Management at InforSense Ltd (now part of IDBS) where he developed translational informatics technology. His research interests include the development of bio and medical informatics methodologies and technologies and collaborative knowledge management platforms and working practices. He received is doctoral degree from Imperial College London. Greg Leibfreid is IT Manager in the Translational Informatics R&D IT Team. He leads Janssen’s technical team who develop, deploy and manage the tranSMART platform. John Boles is an IT Lead in the Translational Informatics R&D IT Team. He is responsible for internal software development of tranSMART at Janssen. Jonathan Cornibe is a Senior Analyst the Translation Informatics R&D IT team. He leads the technical activities associated to populating tranSMART with research data. Metriks Conser is an IT Lead in the Translational Informatics R&D IT Team, Sándor Szalma is Senior Research Fellow and Head of External Innovation, R&D IT in Janssen Research & Development. His current interests span researching, developing and applying statistical data mining, pathway, network and disease modelling, bio- and medical informatics methodologies for enhancing drug discovery and development. His past positions included president of MeTa Informatics and senior director of Computational Biology and Bioinformatics at Accelrys, Inc. He was cofounder of Acheuron Pharmaceuticals, Inc. He lectured at UCSD Extension previously and now is adjunct professor at Rutgers University in the Computational Biology and Molecular Biophysics program. He is the author of 40 scientific publications and book chapters and five patents and patent applications. He received his doctoral degree in chemistry from A. Szent-Györgyi Medical University in Szeged, Hungary.

Role in/ Contribution to the Consortium: WP contributions in WP1: Platform Delivery, WP2: Platform Development, WP4: Analytics Research & Content Curation, WP5: Governance and Business Models, WP 6: Community Engagement & Outreach (EFPIA Leader) WP7: Ethics.

Expertise: Janssen are the original developers of the tranSMART platform as its own internal translational research platform. They have subsequently made this available as an open source project.
